There are so many companies and different types of sex lubes that are currently on the market, so it can be very overwhelming when trying to choose one for your own personal use. Everyone has had the experience of walking into a store and standing in the sex lube aisle, just blankly staring at the shelves of different bottles and not knowing what you are looking for or what the different types mean. Here is a basic lesson on the major types of lube and what they mean. The first and maybe the most common type is water based sex lube. Typically, this is considered to be the safest of all the lubes. These types of lubricants are water soluble which means that they dissolve in water and make for a very easy clean up process. Water based lube absorbs into the skin and evaporates so they are very low maintenance which is why they are the most widely used of any personal lubricant. Another thing that makes these lubes so popular is that they do not irritate or make the latex dissolve from the condom. Although these are great, do not overlook the fact that the sugar in these lubes can cause yeast infections in women who are already prone to them. They also make a lot of these types in flavored lubes too. These can be fun, but they are only intended for external use and never to be used in the vagina or anus. One of the only bad things about water based sex lubricants is that they dry quicker than other ones, but with some saliva or a little more water, they can be regenerated rather easily. The second type of sex lube that you will come across is an oil based formula. One of the most important things to know about this type is that it dissolves latex and as a result lowers the effectiveness of condoms. They are also not water soluble so they are more difficult to clean off the body. Because of these things, oil based lubricants are no longer considered a safe way to practice sex. Since it is so much harder to clean off of your body, it often leaves a residue inside the vagina or anus that can lead to a bacterial infection. Overall, this is not a very safe or effective lubricant to use when having intercourse. The last type of sex lube is a silicone based product. These are the newest type of lube and have become very popular because they are compatible with any type of condom. Although silicone based sex lubes are somewhat harder to wash off the body, they last much longer than any other type. Regardless of what type of sex lube you decide to use, it is important to know what each one will provide for you and your partner.
